"Golden era of MARS was the Korean War" was a remark that Bill made in the podcast. What he mean't to say was, "My remark on the 'golden hours' of MARS history of course referred to Vietnam. The Korean war defined the need, so the ham community was ready when Vietnam erupted a couple of years later. Within weeks of the first U.S. troops' landing in 'Nam, as they soon nicknamed the country, MARSgrams were flowing back to the States. Phone patches soon followed. That was one aspect of a divisive war that won everybody's cheers for MARS."
