My New Project

After my last blog post, "Circle the Wagons",  I made no further posts.  I wrote thousands of words that I did not publish, because the changes happening here and in the West were to so devastating to me, including the explosion of antisemitism on the streets of the West and on its college campuses was reminiscent of pre-war Germany and the silent majority that sat on the sidelines and let it happen.  Perhaps nobody saw it coming, but hardly anyone outside of the Jewish community took to the streets.  Antisemitic violence on the Harvard campus, "depended on the context".  Every time I sat down to write, something new and even more unbelievable happened, leaving me with no words.

Perhaps the stress of the news, being the executor of my father's estate, the very personal losses we in Israel are taking every day caused a change in my health.  At age 67, I walked 6KM every day with my dog, ate properly, avoided sugar and other chemical food products.  I was on top of the World with my health, enjoyed my work and the podcast.  I had the tiger by the tail.
In late July I suddenly was out of breath coming up stairs, or taking long walks with Mika, my dog.  Perhaps a virus or some other contagion?  In August I strained my back just getting up off the ground. Then my health started to avalanche with increasing pain and fatigue.

A few weeks ago an X-ray revealed that I have serious osteoporosis in my spine and arms.  My wife, Karen, seeing my sudden decline insisted that I get new blood work and a CT scan.  In Israel, our medical system can take some time to get the services that you need, unless you are related to Karen.  Karen was able to work miracles to move all of these appointments up to the present.  I found my own radiologist, a former neighbor, who I once supported with fast Ethernet from the USA.

These tests and the CT scan revealed that I have severe osteoporosis, caused by Myeloma, a blood cancer that triggered the osteoporosis and severe anemia.  I have plenty of lesions on my bones and ribs, that the pain is quite severe.  Last Thursday, I got the official diagnosis.

My new project is follow my treatment to its end.  I don't know how long it will take, or what it will involve.  My good friend, Sol, a retired doctor, gave me good advice.  Manage your pain and let everyone else do the rest.  I have a positive attitude and know that I am giving opportunities to everyone I know to step up to the plate and help me or someone else.  In Jewish, we call these mitzvot, or good deeds.  I am surrounded by people helping me.  Since  you are a long way away, do a mitzvah every day by helping someone else.  Keep me in mind when you do it.  It will help to balance my ledger.

I will post here more regularly using my recovery as the framework for larger discussions.  I need to write, to document my new project.  I hope that you will follow me and keep me in your prayers.  My Hebrew name for Jews to include me in their prayers is Yisrael ben Sarah.

I pray for a successful outcome.

Why Jim, we have amateur radio in common! I can now appreciate your physical issues first hand. We should both recover, fully, this next year. Amen.

Eric: I am so sorry to hear of your illness. Getting old is not easy as we all know. I have been a ham for 58 years and have been through a lot with the passion I hold for this endeavor. Yes, things here stateside have been horrible as well with the democrats giving Israel a hard time in the hour of need. The antisemitism is real here. Promoted by colleges, democrat elites, and other ignorant people who throw around terms like Nazi, facist and worse. I cannot understand why American Jews still support the democrat party. In our recent election, democrats apparently lost 10-20% of American Jews. Why not 100%? I have no idea what they are thinking. But, I do expect things to slowly get better over here and maybe DT can help with both Israel and Ukraine. God help us all. My best to you and I will pray for your recovery.

Eric, so sorry to hear of your medical diagnosis. I want to encourage you that medical treatments for these conditions have come a long way. I was diagnosed in 2011 with a rare lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma cancer and it’s been completely under control for the last 13 years. I live a normal life. From your post, I see that you have a positive attitude about your condition and that’s half the battle in healing. I will keep you in my prayers.

Second, don’t give any credence to the antisemitism on our college campuses. The protesters are ignorant pawns indoctrinated by liberal professors. The majority of Americans stand behind Israel and pray for you every day. The Bible says that God will bless those who bless Israel and that is what the majority of Americans want for Israel. May God bless and keep you and may His face shine upon you. Shalom.

Dear Bill - we so appreciate the support in Israel. However, nobody should be afraid to go to school in the USA. It is tie to clean out the schools from K to Phd, by sending your kids to other schools. The majority should not be silent.

I am told now that we are very advanced i cancer treatment. I am looking forward to find out how advanced, now that I have the disease.

Eric, I so sorry to hear about your illness. I was diagnosed with CLL 3 years ago. Its very slow type and I've been ok so far. Only symtom is tiredness and anxiety. I get blood work every 6 months and see an Oncologist he looks at my bloodwork and says it looks good. If and when I develop symptoms I will have to take a pill the rest of my life. Obviously yours is something different than I have. Hang in there buddy God bless you and your country. 73 from the middle of nowhere Idaho.

Eric I am not Jewish but want you to know that your people are not alone. I pray for Jews around the world and for the peace of Jerusalem. I also teach my kids to do so well as teach them about the holocaust and Jewish history. I pray for your health and the strength that HaShem gives…

Yisrael ben Sarah,
I'm saddened to read what you suffering from. I'm 75 and still healthy, but I recognize that I could encounter a serious health problem at any time, just as you have. I will keep you in my thoughts, hoping your condition can be managed acceptably and you'll have many happier years ahead.

Thanks, Doug. Getting the pain under control is the most important part of this project. I will take pain free for shorter time, than a painfully long life.

Eric,
Enjoyed your work for years. Out of the blue, your health goes sideways. The world in general seems to be doing it also. Don’t give up the fight and battle on.

Hi Eric,
Well I am sorry to hear of your medical challenges. As an older cousin says, "Old age isn't for sissies." Yes, I am having more issues also, but the Lord is keeping me here. I have a good friend, 10 years younger than I,who happens to be Jewish also; who overcame stage 4 non hodgekins, and has the reduced bone density osteoporosis as a result of the treatments. But he had a full recovery. But he is alive OK today. So I pray for you and Karen, and the doctors and medical personal; to have wisdom and insight. PRAYING FOR complete healing for you.
Regarding the antisemitism in this country, especially, our college campuses especially the larger ones, have been a hotbed of anti Jewish or Christian influences. There are many who will prey on the ignorance of many young folks who don't have a personal experience to draw from; and are thereby mislead.
The next two weeks following Oct. 7, 2023; in our church service at Element Church; the Senior pastor made a specific statement; that for a Christian to have any bias against Jewish persons; is to go against God Himself. Jesus was Jewish. In Genesis, God stated to Abram the blessings to all who bless you and whoever curses you, i will curse. Our church sent $ 10,000 to help with relief efforts for those displaced by the invasion. When our pastor stated that "This church will always stand with the people of Israel"; our entire congregation stood and applauded.
My prayers for all of you. Stay positive!
Vern

If you read Psalms of David, then you have no fear. Choosing to fight evil in the World is part of the job description.

Shavuah Tov, Eric/Yisrael. We've just come down from quite an extended Shabbos Melave Malka here in North Texas; and I thought I'd just check in to see what was cooking at QSO Today. Refuah sh'leima. For sure, I'll be davening for you and doing chesed to your z'chus. I'll let you know what they are, as they arise. The first will be later today: a donation to Yad Ezra v'Shulamit through my buddy there, Shraga K.

I hope you and your family remain safe, given the matzav. We say Tehillim every day for everybody, between Mincha and Ma'ariv, and we all have bookmarks with the names of the captives. I'm at Congregation Ohr Hatorah in Dallas.

Just for random radio talk: I do SOTA and POTA, and I run any one of three rigs: lab599 "Discovery TX-500," PennTek "TR-45L Skinny," and LNR Precision "Mountain Topper MTR4b. I have a bunch of wire and whip antennae from Chameleon and Tim Ortiz (he's on eBay), several Begali keys, and three identical Czech Army "RM-31" keys from the 1950s/60s CE (my favorites).

B'chavod rav,

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis and pain. Hopefully, the treatment will turn it around.

I also watch with sadness the challenges for Israel and all the Jews. It appears, from my perspective, to be complete madness. Unfortunately, it is all too real and has been for millennia.

I have prayers and will use them for you, your family, your nation, and your people.

God bless,

Jim

Dear Eric,
I am truly so sorry to hear of your health challenges. I am however glad that you decided to share because this gives me the opportunity to pray for your successful recovery as well as for the good people of Israel. I too cannot at all understand what we are seeing in the USA. We good people hope history does not repeat itself in any way. I have been recommending that people read Sinclair Lewis's It Can’t Happen Here (1936). Much Love and Wellness to you Sir! 🙏🏼
