Episode 220 - Mark Rosenberg - 4X1KS

Picture
While exposed to amateur radio at an early age, it was not until Mark Rosenberg, 4X1KS, got his first license and upgraded quickly within a few short months, in Memphis, Tennessee.  In Memphis, Robert Barbee, W4AMI, became Mark’s ham radio mentor driving Mark to satellite excellence. Now in Israel, Mark is active in just about every on-air activity, as well as being the consummate fixer and homebrewer.  4X1KS is my QSO today.

Eric,

A great conversation and so true. I have been a ham since 1960 and have seen the reduction in gentlemanly conduct of hams on the air, in the clubroom, and even in interpersonal relations. I think it is a general reduction in gentlemanly behavior across the board. Having said that ham radio is still one of the finest hobbies in the world and that has kept me involved with it for all these years. There is something new every day. My forte is building the little circuits and just tinkering like Mark discussed. I have built some extensive kits in the past but that does not interest me at this point. Troubleshooting them when they didn’t work was also a great education. In addition to that thought my idea would be that every prospective ham must build a simple breadboard kit and have it working as part of the tech license exam. There are thousands of them available from China for three and four dollars. I ordered two FM radio kits last night and they together were eight dollars including shipping. The manual written by an American female engineer is outstanding in explaining how the radio works and how to build it and as a bonus she spends 10 pages just on learning how to solder. This little kit even has you solder in an integrated circuit. Anyone can do it!

Listening to your podcast each week is an excellent use of an hour. Many times I listen to them while doing more mundane tasks around the home or driving. I am encouraging other younger hams in our radio club to start listening to them because every week they can learn something new and useful in this excellent hobby.

Thanks again for your excellent educational and entertaining podcasts.
