Episode 445 - Nick Tusa - K5EF

Nick Tusa, K5EF, embarked on his ham radio journey as a teenager in a New Orleans Jesuit high school, where he was introduced to the cutting-edge technology of a Central Electronics 10A SSB Exciter at the school's ham radio station. This early fascination sparked a lifelong friendship between Nick and Wes Schum, W9DYV, the co-founder and chief engineer of Central Electronics. Over the course of their 50-year friendship, Nick not only built a successful career in radio and communications but also became Schum's biographer. K5EF is my QSO today.

It’s a beautiful facility. We would like to see some detail on how the S line became rack mounted

Hi Don,

The equipment cabinetry are from decommissioned 911 centers -- 'residue' from my work as a public safety radio consultant. These were once made by Motorola for old analog button and LED radio control consoles. If you check with firms that specialize in used land mobile radio gear you might find some of these gems. There is little demand for them today and so you could find some good deals.

The actual rack units for the S-line gear came from https://www.novexcomm.com/

The Motorola cabinetry is heavy gauge steel and works great for dealing with "boatanchor" rigs. They easily handle the 90 and 120lb desk crusher rigs of old.
