Moving to Israel

While our podcast is in English, I want to change the venue every once in a while to give a different perspective from hams in other countries.  My next QSOs will be with hams in Israel, where I now live, work and play ham radio.  I hope that you find these conversations interesting.  I want to put some context around the people and the places that you will hear discussed with both Yehuda, 4X1TQ, and Amnon, 4X1DF.

Israel is a small country, the size of New Jersey, with a population of just over 8 million people.  Established in 1948, after the declaration by the United Nations,  We are in a tough neighborhood and are at war with our Arab neighbors around us as well as with the terrorist organizations that are embedded in the population.  The stories of both Yehuda and Amnon may appear to be unusual to listeners who come from the more established countries in the West.  Their story is born out of the struggle to protect and defend our tiny and relatively new country. While these stories may seem unusual, especially Amnon's story, there are many in Israel with stories to tell. Israel is rich with stories. There are many Israelis who are called to serve their country many times throughout their lives when they and their special skills are needed.

As a people and a culture, Israelis tend to dialog very fast with lots of interruption, sometimes similar to meeting a friend in the bus station where you have to catch up in two minutes what took twenty years to experience. You may find that I do that in these interviews. It may appear rude - for that I apologize to you dear listener. After fourteen years here, the culture is catchy.

I look forward to your feedback on these QSOs.

Eric,

I have been listening to your podcast for the past year and have caught up on all of them. My recommendation for a future show would be Joe Taylor K1JT. He is brilliant and a great person to spend some time with. When I was getting started on 2M EME 5 years ago and had many questions, I spent an afternoon with Joe at his home along with some other EME veterans and learned much from his insights while enjoying some fine wine and great food. He was just as proud of his 2M DXCC as his Nobel prize, we all had a good laugh after his comment!

He has tremendous insight on the future of amateur radio and he has personalty greatly enriched my life as a ham.

I have been a ham since just after my Bar mitzvah over 50 years ago. some of the Bar mitzvah gifts that i recall were a Weller soldering gun, and ARRL membership! I have been active on HF and some VHF for the 50 years and currently operate 9o% CW, 5% digital mostly JT64 & FSK for metior scatter and just 5% on SSB.

I have not been back to Israel for many years due to other travel schedules for family visits. I hope to get back in the next few years and may take a radio along. i have operated as WB2RBG/4X during the summer of 1970 while visiting some of the hams that i got to know on HF. And again as AE3T/4X many years later with just my HT during a mission trip.

Keep up your great work and try to bring back some of the Israeli hams who would be interested in talking about their backgrounds. I wish Abe 4X4IX was still around. I have visited him and operated his Collins S line in Hertzalya. He was very involved in the early space program in Israel.

Shalom,
Howard (Chaim) Sherer AE3T
