University Tipshim - Eric Guth 4Z1UG

The Jewish people survived 3500 years of oppression at the hands of our friends and enemies with our faith, our strong will (described in the Bible as "stiff neck"), and our sense of humor.  Those of us who watch the culture war in the West, marvel at the deterioration of the West's ivy league universities, its leaders, its education, and its policies.  "Cultural appropriation", was first used in "the academy" in the 1980's, according to the encyclopedia Britannica, and happens when members of a majority group adopt cultural elements of a minority group in exploitative, disrespectful, or stereotypical way.  Cleveland Indians or Washington Redskins as names for sports teams is cultural appropriation. Shame on the owners of these teams, a hundred years ago, who did not know how insensitive they were.

Of course, we Jews have been too busy trying to establish a place in western society, after being persecuted everyplace else, to worry about cultural appropriation.  We have not been vigilant about watching and reporting those non-Jews, from the majority culture, who might purchase gefilte fish from the kosher food aisle in their local supermarket.  We are considering, as a minority group, submitting legislation that would require some kind of ethnic test before our ethnic foods could be purchased by anyone outside our distinct group. We also deplore Klezmer Bands made up of ethnic Germans and Poles. Who would think!

It has come to the attention of the Jewish People that Yale University may in fact be in violation of cultural appropriation.  What follows is a recording of an actual call to Yale to straighten out this abuse.

Curious.. What do those phrases mean in English that you will allow Yale to use? Also... what is the website where these comments go to?

The choices that the Israeli cultural office gave were:
"Lehem Havita" or Omelette Sandwich
"Shlufim" - tiny notes used to cheat on examinations
"Anachnu Universiti Tipsha" - we are a stupid university

These phrases you can use in Hebrew and we will allow it.

Hi Eric. If I may make two suggestions...Your blog with white lettering on an orange background is difficult to read. I think black on orange or black on white would be better, at least for my aged eyes! The other suggestion is to use standard phonetics when you introduce hams in your weekly podcasts. Although your enunciation is excellent I sometimes have trouble with one letter . Shalom Jack Schuster W1WEFio

I agree, Jack. It would require a whole re-design of the website. This is a big project for me. I will have to see what it takes.

I can't tell if this is tongue in cheek or not, but if not, trust me, it would be a huge PR blunder.

While the Ivy League antisemitism has had 60 years to build up and explode, it is not a surprise. The phone call to Yale is the real deal, however, the video is a satire.

Far worse than gefilte fish are BAGELS! They have been appropriated everywhere, and even with ham and cheese sandwiches! Ugh! No justice.

Bagels are cultural appropriation especially if made and sold by Sara Lee using a Wonder Bread formula with mayonnaise, baloney, and cheese.

I'm unsure of your real attitude regarding "cultural appropriation." Some of your article seems a bit "tongue in cheek." Nonetheless, I must express my feelings.

To me, the critical issue regarding "cultural appropriation" is the respect with which it is executed. Should the cultural essence of (for example) the Hungalatos be assumed by a group of bumbling inadequates, then at least one of the remaining dozen or so native Hungalatos should take offense and take to the media or the courts for remediation.

There is a problem of jurisdiction. Suppose a group of sincere and accomplished reenactors wish to raise public awareness of the values (or, simply, the beauty) of the Hungalatos culture. From whom should they seek permission? Would the dissenting vote of one grumpy old Hungalato deny them? And could a descendent from when the Hungalatos culture was in its heyday prove his claim? And would the fact that the Hungalatos culture was, itself, appropriated in part from a prior culture be pertinent?

Another side of the question is that the Hungalatos culture might itself be so ludicrously formulated that it deserves being held up for ridicule "Saturday Night Live style".

Nonetheless, we Hungalatos take our culture very seriously. Don't step on our prerogative!

Stan

My article was satire with a tinge of sadness for the decline of universities, hijacked under the noses of their benefactors. Over 40 years ago, I was not impressed with the young faculty at the University of California, who even then hated America, loved dope, and made English literature unreadable. It took years for the decline made with unlimited investments from the enemies of the United States. The coffee has been spilled. Now it is time to smell it.

The solution is easy. Don't send your kids and grand-kids. Starve the universities of students until the market makes its dramatic correction. Besides, America needs a new generation of workers that know how to get up in the morning, learn the skills, do the job, advance in training, to keep the systems of society up and running. Not everyone can be a social media consultant.

Bravo,
Of curse it is satire, but unfortunately not true. No, I’m not a tinfoil hat wearing nut job. However, unfortunately and to my amazement much of the “cultural decline” we are seeing in the Western (Judeo-Christian) values appear more by insidious design….more in like with efforts to topple our societies and replace with Marxism/Islamist….call me crazy
Hope I’m wrong, No State is always correct. Politicians are certainly rarely correct, and typically in spite of themselves. However October 7th was an attack and the attackers must be eliminated by what ever means. There is no such thing as disproportional response. No other military does a more complete job to protect non-combatants thad do the IDF. It either ends now or it’s coming to EU and USA pronto.

And yes, we (USA) need to clean up the Academie,,,,,,I can no longer recognize my Lutheran University, Well known New Orleans grad school, or Chicago Medical School…..sad, unfortunate, but telling in dark way. Very sad.

73 es God Bless All

BTW, If this is too strong to post, no problem…..not looking to irritate people but enough is enough already1
