Episode 033 - Greg Latta - AA8V

Picture
Amateur radio has its renaissance men that include Greg Latta, AA8V. By day, Greg is a university physics professor and lecturer, an avid homebrewer of vacuum tube transmitters and receivers, and metal fabricator. By Night, he is an award winning musician and folk artist. An attention to detail and organization, in perfect harmony, is the successful formula that Greg discusses with Eric, 4Z1UG, in his QSO Today.

So I sent Greg a message when I was preparing the show notes page, on "what makes an exciter a Wingfoot".

Here is his response:
The "Winged Foot" with the diamond around it is a trademark of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Jim worked at Goodyear Aerospace:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodyear_Aerospace
(where they have the big blimp hanger) and Goodyear Aerospace helped to build the chassis for the Wingfoot Exciter. When Jim built the exciter he put the plaque on it that said "W8EXI Wingfoot VFO":

When I built the Wingfoot 813 Amplifier, I had a similar plaque made for it that read "AA8V Wingfoot 813" so that it would match:

The two compliment each other beautifully and constitute a versatile, powerful (250W out) system with excellent keying.
