Episode 004 - Rich Fusinski - K8NDS
Rich's ham radio journey began, in the suburbs of Detroit, on a bicycle, when he was sixteen years old, in search of the source of 160 meter conversations he heard on his portable all band radio. Looking for "big" antennas on the neighborhood houses, he found his "Elmer", Charlie, W8LVR, who led him through his first Novice license in 1964. His first transmitter was a homebrew two tube transmitter using a 6L6 tube. Amateur radio was the door opener and creator of opportunities for Rich in both the US Navy and later to General Motors where he spent his career. Now retired in Arizona, Rich is the expert and inventor of "Fractional Wave Loop" antennas.

This is K8NDS theme and variation on the magnetic loop antenna. Instead of a solid loop, Rich winds flat copper strap around a helical form made out of PVC pipe. The surface of the flat copper increases the length of the antenna while keeping the whole antenna smaller and more compact. All of the benefits of a full size loop, but in a more efficient and smaller package.
