Episode 072 - Bob Heil - K9EID

Picture
Bob Heil, K9EID, is no stranger to ham radio, as a pioneer in audio systems, not only for the rock and roll stars in the 60’s and 70’s, but for ham radio as well. As the founder of Heil Sound, Bob’s injection of audio experience and know how has raised the bar of what is acceptable for good sounding voice communications on amateur radio. Bob shares his ham radio story with Eric, 4Z1UG, on this episode of QSO Today.

If you've never attended one of Bob Heil's audio presentations/seminars, you should. Always informative, always entertaining. Mr. Heil has a presence, and a passion for all things audio, and it shows.
Thanks Eric for QSO Today.

This is a very interesting QSO. Thank you Bill and Eric. I followed each subject with google searches and found many items for further reading. What a wonderful career you have had Bill. Ham radio is certainly blessed by your being a part of this great hobby.

As usual, a very interesting QSO. The chassis punches that Bob Heil mentioned are made by Greenlee, not Greenleaf. I have three of them (for different sizes of tube sockets), purchased over 60 years ago when I started building radios.

Right you are Shlomo. I will change the link in the show notes to http://www.greenlee.com/catalog/Knockout-Sets/KNOCKOUTS

I have a few of these someplace myself.

Great interview Eric. Really enjoyed hearing Bob Heil's views on the lack of building and the prevalence of appliance operation. In a weird coincidence, Pete Juliano and I were talking about PHASING today on SolderSmoke Podcast 183! Indeed, very few hams really understand how phasing can be used to send and receive SSB. I really liked the drawing on the front of that 10B - QUADRATURE. 73 Bill

Awesome interview! I wish I had known the Central Electronics folks, but I was born just a little too late. But I do have a prized Central Electronics 100V front and center in my ham shack. HI!

Eric,

You need to bring Bob back for round two. You never got to your usual questions about ham radio origins, recommendations for new hams and returning hams....... I think Bob has another hour or two to expound. You are recording history in your podcasts.

I want to know what hams like me who have a weak or soft voice can do to improve their signal recognition and how Bob would help us older hams with hearing impairments. He did answer some of my questions but I have more. I just ordered his book on microphones.

By the way, I do have one of his Clear Speech DSP speakers and it does help remove noise. Not beautiful AM sound like he is talking about but it does help.

Keep the podcasts coming.

Dear Dave,

Thanks for your suggestions. Bob does answer his email if you have more questions.

I highly recommend singing lessons for improving the pitch and timber of the voice. A non-electronic way to improve a weak or soft voice. Hi Hi

Bob can really tell a good story and explain the technical terms.

This podcast with Bob was amazing.!Stumbled onto your site by accident. I worked in the AV industry for nearly 20 years before I went into automation/robotics. Its hard to keep a sound guy down!

Thank you so much:)

Which podcast discussed the pineboard t/r switch (was it a DPST or DPDT relay) which grounded the receiver during transmit? Thank you. Steve KD3LQ
