Bob Weed, W7SCY, was born and raised in the Oregon Cascade Mountains over eighty years ago. In this retirement, Bob has returned home to an area that has always been subject to fire, mudslides, earthquakes, and active volcanoes. W7SCY shares his seventy plus years as a radio amateur that includes his interest in traffic nets and emergency operations in his area, in this QSO Today.

I mistakenly put my brother Roger, KV4I in Arizona during the podcast. He is actually in Florida! I regret the error..

I would like to underscore the value of participating in nets. In the interview, discussion revolved around knowing what time and frequency on which a net occurs. In actuality, net time is inconsequential because if an event happens people will immediately go to the associated frequencies. For example, we have 2 meter nets Monday, Wednesday and Friday. However, during hurricanes or tornadoes, established net times are irrelevant as we turn on the radios to the appropriate frequency. The leadership or net controls will active the net at any appropriate time. Knowledge of frequencies, names/calls of leaders and net controls, as well as protocol is invaluable.

I agree with Roger's comments that if a net is activated for an emergency, net members may expect the net to be on the established frequency regardless of the normal check in time.

I also neglected to specify that not all nets are for emergency use; some nets are social nets for hams who have a shared interest such as YL nets for female hams.
