Episode 177 - Jeff Damm - WA7MLH

Picture
Jeff Damm, WA7MLH, designs and builds his own amateur radio receivers, transmitters, and transceivers using the ugly construction method based on the work of his amateur radio mentor and friend, Wes Hayward, W7ZOI.  Jeff shares his ham radio story and his electronic construction philosophy with Eric, 4Z1UG, in this QSO Today.

The Podcast interview with WA7MLH was most enjoyable. I particularly enjoyed his comments about "Ugly Construction." I think it's a wonderful way to build, stuff. Almost anyone can build really creative circuits using ugly construction. I personally find it more fun and satisfying than printing neat and pretty circuit boards. I guess it just re-enforces the old saying that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", or something to that effect.

I use a Harbor Freight Spot Weld removal drill bit that costs under $5.00. Using a drill press they do a beautiful job of cutting solder islands on copper clad board. If I want to do through-board stuff I simple drill a very small pilot hole through the board which marks the center of the "island" on both sides, then I take the spot weld drill bit and make an island on both sides using the pilot hole as a center guide and a hole to run a wire through to jumper the two sides.

Thanks for a great interview!

Excellent interview. Lots of wisdom and tribal knowledge from OM WA7MLH. I put some additional comments on my blog. 73 and HNY to all. Thanks Eric! Thanks Jeff! Bill N2CQR

Good interview. Always good to get permission from experts to build ugly! One WA7MLH / W7ZOI project I got a lot out of was the Hybrid Cascode IF amplifier with AGC from December 2007 QST. It's good to use as the heart of a superhet receiver. de WA5BDU
